Thomas Hunter was just on his way home from work at the Java Hut when he was attacked out of nowhere. As the bullet clipped his head, the world went black. When he awoke, he was in a forest – not just a regular forest, but a black forest. The trees were black, the earth was black, and the sky was out of sight. Not everything was black. The water was blood red and the deadly eyes of the black bats were as red as the water. Thomas Hunter could never have expected the events that were about to occur.
When asked what my favorite book is (Besides the Bible), I always reply, “Black.” Ted Dekker did such a fantastic job weaving symbolism into the perfect fantasy story. Black is the perfect novel to put into words what it feels like to be a Christian. The first time I read it, Black put into words exactly how it feels when I worship God. It’s almost as though you can feel the words. The symbolism is brilliant. Teeleh’s overwhelming beauty on the bridge followed by his black monstrous image shows exactly what Satan is. He appears beautiful and appealing when he is luring people to sin. As soon as he has you within his wicked reach, he reveals his true image.
Black is a part of Ted Dekker’s Circle Series. The books include Black, Red, White, and Green. From there, other novels were written that reveal mysteries that the series does not answer. The whole collection is like a fabulously arranged web. Ted Dekker is brilliant.
