The novel begins with a very confused man in seminary school. He is questioning life and the battle between good and evil. After a very philosophical discussion, the man (Kevin) begins to head home. On his way home he gets a call from a mysterious man. The man gives Kevin a riddle and three minutes to answer the riddle before his car explodes. Kevin can't think of the answer and chooses to ditch his car at the last second. He barely escapes before the explosion. Now Kevin knows this man is serious. The demented caller refers to himself as Slater. Slater continues to give Kevin riddles with time limits related to the number 3. With each call, the threat grows and involves more innocent lives. Kevin is given the option to end these games if he confesses his greatest sin. If only he know what Slater was referring to. Kevin eventually tracks down Samantha, a childhood friend. Together they retrace the steps in Kevin’s disturbing childhood. Kevin is forced to reface a cousin with mental disorders, an uncle who practically lives in a box and knows nothing of the world today, an aunt to calls herself Princess, and an old enemy who tried to kill him in an abandoned warehouse when he was just a kid. Throughout the novel, Kevin is faced with the battle of good and evil. Ultimately, he learns that we all possess a little bit of both inside of our souls. We have to learn to put the evil to rest and embrace the good in our hearts. Sometimes, like in Kevin’s case, it is easier said than done.
The novel is an exquisite work. It is well written and constantly leaves you at the edge of your seat. I regularly found myself reading at 3 a.m. and not wanted to quit. I actually got annoyed when I had to close the book to go and eat dinner. The end will completely throw you for a loop. This book is absolutely worth your time.
